This week’s soccer buzz

-

Toni Silva is a man for whom everything he’s touched has not turned to silver, let alone gold. In a chequered career that began with much promise at Chelsea and Liverpool, he has since bumbled to 10 professional clubs. Silva’s “letter” (more a toddler’s rant) to Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was crammed with enough sour grapes to have made a bad wine. The supposed offence he was responding to — that Mosimane had dared to say things “never worked out” for the Guinea-Bissau international at Downs. Do Silva and his bandwagon realise that Sundowns contain a core of players who have run through walls for Mosimane, winning the 2016 Caf Champions League, three league titles and two cups with no offseason in five years? “Weakest coach you’ve seen”? Weak attempt Toni, try again.

● Muhsin Ertugral’s exit at Maritzburg United surprised no one in particular in SA’s football fraternity. We are talking of a coach who not only relegated Ajax Cape Town last season, but who failed dismally to revive the Urban Warriors’ fortunes in the NFD. As to what Maritzburg bosses were thinking when they hired Ertugral , only a fly on the wall in the club’s boardroom knows.
