OZ BLUES

Sunday Times Travel reader Shirley Crocket writes: “Thank you for the informative article on Western Australia (“Two Weeks in the Wild West of Oz”, February 3). I’m due to visit in April and the itinerary prepared by my brother, who’s lived in Perth for almost 40 years, is very similar to yours. As this is my 10th visit I have already seen and been to most of the places that you recommend. But this venture will be viewed through new eyes as some of our cousins from Joburg will be visiting for the first time.

However, what you overlooked in your article was the difficulty and expense of getting into Oz as a South African-passport holder. Those with foreign passports sail in but South Africans are treated like secondclass citizens and we knock our heads at every turn.

Being over 75 (by one month) also complicates the matter. Unfortunately, this leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth before one departs and makes me disinclined to ever bother to go Down Under again.
