In case there were any suspicions that Calitzdorp had merely a cameo role in the ongoing theatrics of the world of port, note that UK writer and wine master Tim Atkin, pictured below, rated two local vintages — including the 2016 Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve — as possibly two of the finest SA vintages ever. In his 2018 SA Special Report, he gave the 2016 94 points while the ‘06 scored a whopping 95 points. Atkin perhaps nailed it when he said in his 2017 report that “South Africa isn’t quite the Wild West, but there’s a frontier spirit to its wine industry ...”
