Songwriter got Lion’s share
In 2004, the family of South African composer Solomon Linda filed a lawsuit against Disney for the use of the song The Lion Sleeps
Tonight in the film The Lion King and its accompanying stage musical. Solomon had originally written the song, then titled Mbube, in 1939. The family sought $1.5m (about R22m) in royalties and two years later reached an undisclosed settlement with Abilene Music, which held global rights to the song and licensed it to Disney
