GETTING THERE

The writer flew from Joburg to Hoedspruit on CemAir. That airline, however, is currently not operating. Try Airlink (flyairlink.com) instead, which flies the route with return fares around R4,260.

If you’d rather drive, you have the choice of two fine routes off the N4 at Belfast — the scenic one (via Lydenburg, the Long Tom Pass and Sabie), or the faster one (from Lydenburg and down Abel Erasmus Pass). It’s about six hours from Joburg.
