ANC clean-up has hardly begun

-

President Cyril Ramaphosa does not have the freedom to choose his cabinet after the elections any more than he did before — he will have to get the top six’s approval, and we know what that means.

The ANC had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to even consider its systemic corruption a problem.

The only thing that made a real difference is the poor result for the party in the 2016 elections. If it has done well in this election, the pressure will be gone, and it will go back to its old ways.

We’re hopeful that Ramaphosa really does want to clean up corruption in the ANC, but, realistically, 95% of the cleanup work lies ahead — the party has not yet taken any action to clean up its leadership, and its election lists are stuffed with known criminals.

Also, consider the essential role of a strong opposition in uncovering corruption — if it weren’t for the DA, we would not even have seen Thuli Madonsela’s state capture report, for example. Strengthen the opposition if you want a better ANC.
