No fanfare for a loving mom

● Zodwa Tyoloda, pictured below, was killed and buried in a pit latrine. She died without a hashtag or “Missing Person” poster to draw attention to her plight.

The 31-year-old’s body was found near Qumbu in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday after family had reported her missing on Sunday.

There was no high-profile hype around her disappearance on social media and no official visits by dignitaries to her family.

Neighbour Ngawonke Bulala said Tyoloda was community-centred.

“We grew up together. She was a dear community member we could always count on. We all shared the same vision of a better community,” said Bulala.

Tyoloda raised her three children on a social grant and her modest contract employment as a labourer with the expanded public works programme.

The cause of her death is unknown, but Mthatha police spokesperson Capt Dineo Koena said: “Signs of foul play are evident, with bruises visible around her neck”.
