Some of the high-profile murders of women that have sparked nationwide anger and protests

● Boxing champion Leighandre Jegels was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend, policeman Bulelani Manyakanya, while driving in East London last week. She had a protection order against him. He died following a car crash as he fled.

● Sisanda Fani, a medic, was in her dressing gown, parked outside her complex in Restitutio­n Avenue, Fairview, Port Elizabeth, when she was shot in the head last Saturday morning. Police are still on the hunt for her killer.

● Angelique ClarkAbrah­ams, 25, was attacked in her East London home while her young son was in the house. She had also taken out a protection order against the man charged with her murder and rape.

● Janika Mallo, 14, was raped and murdered. Her mother, Janine Mallo, 31, told IOL her last interactio­n with her daughter had been on Saturday about 6pm when they had an argument. No arrests have been made.

● Pietermari­tzburg woman Verusha Padayachee’s body was found at home last week. Her husband, Roland Pillay, against whom she had sought a protection order, was later found hanging in a Durban hotel room.

● University of the Western Cape student Jesse Hess, 19, was found murdered on August 30 at home in Parow. Her grandfathe­r Chris, 85, was also killed. She had that day won R5,000 in a Women's Month radio competitio­n.

● Former Wynberg Boys’ High pupil Kyle Ruiters, 24, has been charged with murdering Lynette Volschenk, 31, in her flat in Bellville. Ruiters lived one floor below her.
