THE STATE OF THE NATION

-

Of all the edifices that shout “heritage”, the Union Buildings shout it loudest. Construction began in November 1910, the year that the formerly divided colonies were gathered into the Union of South Africa. It would take another 84 years before “the Buildings” came to represent democracy, when they were beatified by Nelson Mandela as he gave his inaugural address on May 10 1994 after being sworn in as the country’s first democratically elected president. To stand a chance of winning R500, tell us the name of the architect — whose singular style can be seen in buildings throughout South Africa.

Send your answer to Entries close at noon on Tuesday September 3. Last week’s winner is Lyndall Adams. The correct answer was Lake Hamana.
