WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

In the heart of once industrial Williamsburg, The Hoxton has become a creative hangout and urban sanctuary for locals and tourists alike

There’s something about Williamsburg. It’s where the cool and creative flock; where the views of New York are unobstructed, and where the old and industrial are revived and transformed into creative hideouts. It’s also where you’ll find the Hoxton — a cool and convivial hotel with an eclectic sense of style that radiates personality. From the outside, the building — which was once a water-tower factory — is unassuming as it blends into its industrial surroundings. The interior, on the other hand, has been stylishly transformed into a captivating living space, where exposed brick meets charming velvet textures.

As the first Hoxton in North America and the fifth addition to the global Hoxton family, this location continues the brand’s signature neighbourhood-inspired ethos. From the diverse range of artworks, the expansive selection of books, the map of recommended must-dos and must-sees in the area and even the design of the duvet covers, the décor is the culmination of the unique touch of 173 local creatives, also known as “Hox Friends”. As a result, the personality and energy of Williamsburg echo throughout all the spaces in this hotel.

The lobby, the main area you’ll find yourself drawn to, is a big industrial space with retro finishes including ample velvet seating in a muted, blush-inclined colour palette, lit from above by a crystal chandelier and hanging globe pendant lights. Natural light pours in during the day as people chat over coffee and work away on laptops and, as the afternoon fades, the coffee is swapped for cocktails and wine and a DJ provides the soundtrack for the night.

The view from my bedroom looked onto an expansive view of the New York skyline across the east river — what’s a stay in New York without a view? The rooms are comfortable with a considered and charming combination of warm dark wood, brushed brass finishes and subtle leather trimmings. View aside, my favourite part of the room had to be the bathroom — the monochrome metro-style tiles and gold finishes are a striking combination.

Located in the heart of Williamsburg, on Wythe Avenue, the Hoxton is a short walk from the subway — short enough to walk with a suitcase, and a quick cycle to Domino Park — the perfect riverside spot to enjoy a view of the New York skyline and Williamsburg Bridge. Grab one of the hotel’s free bikes and set off on two wheels to get a feel for the neighbourhood — I highly recommended it.

The Hoxton Williamsburg has all the prerequisite luxury comforts of a hotel but with the added friendly touch and comforts of home, and with three restaurants and a rooftop bar showing breathtaking city views, you may not need to leave the hotel to get a satisfactory taste of Williamsburg, but I suggest you do.

Go on a bit scavenger hunt for all the thoughtful tips from your new Hox friends and set out on an adventure around the neighbourhood.
