TAKE COVER

- — Elizabeth Sleith

Sadly, suitcase security is an issue of our times. Locks break, and all that plastic wrapping at the airport is just plain old bad for the planet. Now an SA company has come up with a solution that’s practical and fun too: funky protective covers for your luggage. We spoke to Nicola Valentine from There and Back to find out more How did There and Back begin?

There and Back was born earlier this year from both passion and frustration. My friends Sandra Rogers and Pilani Bubu and I — all avid travellers — felt the security of our luggage was compromised and the endless stream of blue plastic wrap at the airport made us yearn for a product that was re-usable and environmentally friendly.

So how do the covers work?

They work on an extremely easy “slip, zip and latch” basis. The strong stretchy fabric slides beautifully over the bag, zips underneath and latches over the zip for extra protection. It’s simple for any traveller.

What are they made of?

They are made from a double-thick scuba, which is robust and has a bit of stretch. It is also quite thick so it cushions and protects the bag nicely.

Is it a one-size-fits-all scenario or do you have different sizes?

They come in medium and large and also have a bit of stretch — so those two options pretty much cover all check-in suitcase sizes.

Tell us a bit more about the designs you chose and how did they come about?

We aim to have fabulous seasonal collections inspired by local design elements. For the current range we worked on four African print patterns, Ndebele (pictured), ShweShwe, Ankara and Mudcloth. Each print design has a lovely story and is created by an emerging young local textile designer.

When did you start selling and how has the reception been?

We started selling last month and the response has been absolutely overwhelming. We have had extremely positive feedback.

What do they cost and where can I get one?

They start at R495. You can order through thereandback.travel or by e-mailing hello@thereandback.travel. We are also opening a showroom at Victoria Yards, Johannesburg, next month.
