BRONWYN KATZ

- By Sanet Oberholzer

Bronwyn Katz, left, is a South African artist who lives and works in Johannesburg. She is a founding member of iQhiya, a network of young, black female artists who specialise in a range of artistic disciplines. Last month she popped onto the radar of the arts community when she won the 2019 FNB Art Prize. We find out what’s on her cultural radar.

Place

The Nest Space is a yoga studio in Joburg, owned and run by women of colour. The space offers yoga and meditation practices to heal the mind and body. I really appreciate the fact that they hold regular full moon and new moon meditation sessions.

Book

Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés is centred on feminine power and is an essential read for everyone, especially amid conversations about gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa and the rest of the world.

Music

Luh’ra is a Cape Townbased singer and songwriter. Her soulful voice and soothing lyrics is medicine to the mind, body and soul.

Restaurant

Breaking bread_za is a Cape Town-based community restaurant. They share amazing food, thoughtprovoking music and great conversation with all.

Theatre

Venus vs Modernity: The story of Saartjie Baartman written by Lebo Mashile. I recently watched the play at the Market Theatre in Joburg. It revisits the story of Sara Baartman and reveals how present representations of black women are imbued with the past.
