Watchmen Showmax

The first episode of the reinterpretation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s seminal 1980s graphic novel takes you into a world where masked vigilantes are illegal and white supremacy is on the rise. Created by Damon Lindelof, it’s not an adaptation of its source material but rather a homage and sequel which manages to provide enough familiar characters and aspects of the comic with a new critique of the current era. Starring Regina King, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Jeremy Irons and Tim Blake Nelson, it’s a new cautionary tale for a new world that even Moore and Gibbons couldn’t quite imagine during the apocalyptic Cold War era of the original.

The Laundromat Netflix

Stephen Soderbergh returns with a star-studded bag of visual tricks to unpack the nefarious world of offshore banking and the revelations of the Panama Papers. Starring Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas and Meryl Streep, it’s a sometimes frustrating film that doesn’t always hit its mark but still has enough to provide a fascinating and darkly humorous look at the complexities of one of the world’s most insidious and lucrative industries.

Godfather of Harlem Showmax

Fans of Ridley Scott’s 2007 film American Gangster may remember the brief appearance of the character of true-life Harlem mobster Bumpy Johnson. Narcos creators Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein take us into the epic story of Johnson’s rise to the throne of the Godfather of Harlem in the 1960s. Played with fierce determination and cold calculation by Forest Whitaker, Johnson is a complicated character who must navigate the tensions presented by the rise of radical black power activists such as Malcolm X and the stubborn racism of the mob in order to pursue his self-interest and the protection of his beloved neighbourhood. New episodes every Wednesday.
