PAINTINGS OF FIRE AND ICE
It’s hard to believe at first glance but this really is a photograph. In fact, it is the overall winner in this year’s Epson International Pano Awards, a global competition for panoramic shooters both professional and amateur. Mieke Boynton, the winner out of 4,913 entries, is clearly a professional, who will go to great lengths for a mesmerising shot. For this, she flew from her home country Australia to this Nordic island nation, famed for its volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Here, she chartered a Cessna 207 to fly her over these spectacular braided rivers. It wasn’t until later, she says, that she saw “the firebreathing dragon in the photo”. She titled the shot Dragonfire. Says Boynton, “The delicate intricacy of nature’s art from 1,000-2,000 feet above fills me with delight. I travel to remote areas … and many of these places resemble giant abstract paintings. I am mesmerised and fascinated by nature’s abstract art.”
We couldn’t agree more that nature is a brilliant painter. Whether you have the chance to view some of its masterpieces these holidays from 1,000 feet, or even just out of a home window, remember to enjoy the art.
