Manage varsity funds thriftily

-

● Getting hold of the funds to pay for their education is a daily battle for many students in SA, says Fundi chief marketing officer Mala Suriah.

“What we often forget is that tertiary funding is about far more than just fees.

It’s also about accommodation, food and having a laptop. It must also include student support – coaching, mentorship and tutoring – if students are to succeed.”

Connected to this is a lack of financial literacy. “Knowing how to budget, how to save, what debt means, for example, are things we often take for granted,” says Suriah. She has this advice for students:

• Find out exactly what your particular qualification will cost and any other expenses you will need to cover;

• Ask questions, get financial advice and read carefully before signing anything;

• You need to gather a support team of people who will stand by you as you navigate through university or college.

• If you are not sure about something, ask questions until you understand. “This is especially true when it comes to your classes and any loans,” says Suriah;

• Be grateful for the opportunity to study. Gratitude and appreciation change the way you face challenges.”
