Three must-see exhibitions this week
Artist: Paul Emmanuel
Exhibition: Men and Monuments Where: Wits Art Museum, Braamfontein, Johannesburg When: Opens March 3, 18h30
For the past decade, Emmanuel has challenged conventions around war memorials, questioning which soldiers are memorialised and which are erased. He investigates the masculine stereotypes around war and fighting. He calls his work “counter-memorials”, impressing the names of randomly selected servicemen into his skin without reference to rank, nationality or ethnicity.
Artist: Cameron Platter
Exhibition: Solid Waste
Where: Whatiftheworld, Cape Town When: Until March 14
Platter, whose work has been described as “the delinquent love child of Quentin Tarantino and Dr Seuss”, has works in major museums around the world. This show examines the “involuntary intoxication protocol of hallucinogenic stimulants opening up a world of mass consumption, violence, hyper-masculinisation, and exhilarated culture”.
Artist: Barthélémy Toguo Exhibition: Bilongue
Where: Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town
When: Until March 7
Pays homage to the sufferings and joys of the residents of a Cameroonian settlement facing stark conditions. “They live and survive there daily, not through violence but through solidarity. When there is a need, one runs to help the other. I wanted to capture the images of their faces to tell them that in this difficult city of Douala, they exist as heroes.”
