CUBAN CLOUT
Cuba is an Olympic boxing superstar.
Since 1972, it has won 37 golds, a world record. One of its legendary fighters was Teófilo Stevenson (1952 – 2012), who won three Olympic golds. He refused to leave Cuba to fight professionally on the world stage. He was often compared to Muhammad Ali, though they never fought. In 1972, US promoters offered him $1m to turn pro. He declined, saying. “What is $1m compared to the love of 8-million Cubans?”
