Strengths
With Markram not playing enough domestic cricket when Prince was the opposing coach, it was hard for Prince to accurately judge Markram’s candidacy. Prince did have an opportunity to work with the Pretoria Boys High School product on last year’s A team tour to India and at a spin camp. It was a short trip, but it gave Prince, who played under two captains in Smith and Shaun Pollock in his career, a chance to get an idea of Markram’s personality. He liked what he saw, even though Markram’s introverted nature was a slight concern.
“He’s quite young and I also had an opportunity to travel with him to the spin camp last year.
“He’s a good batsman and he’s got a lot of good qualities. The little bit I learnt from his personality was that he’s an introvert, but that doesn’t make him a lesser leader.
“It’s not fair to make an assessment on his character based on a 12-day tour, but he came across as a quiet guy and an introvert, but I’m not saying he can’t be a leader.”
