● Prince had a front-row seat to a Bavuma captaincy display in the 2018/19 Four-Day Franchise series when the Lions pipped the Cape Cobras to the post in the final round.

It was also the Bavuma-led Lions who stopped the Cobras in their tracks in Paarl after Prince’s team had won their first four games.

That season was enough for Prince to see that Bavuma had responded well to the demands of franchise leadership.

“When he’s been captain, he’s led from the front. When I’ve seen him captain the Lions, he’s wanted to lead from the front. He may not have had a great tournament with the Jozi Stars in the second edition of the Mzansi Super League.

“They struggled and went on a bad streak, but he batted well and scored runs. I haven’t worked with him as a leader, but from what I’ve seen, the pressure of performing as a captain doesn’t bother him. He played well while the Jozi Stars weren’t good. Do you read more into the fact that the Stars lost plenty of games or do you look at the fact Temba was the main run contributor? He wasn’t burdened by leadership."
