A decision in principle has been made on the siting of the new Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and an announcement on the site is expected in September. Indications are that the new exchange will be contained within the Sorec development in the area bounded by Commissioner, Market and Kort streets — less than a quarter of a mile from the existing exchange in Hollard Street. Despite a veil of secrecy surrounding plans for the new Stock Exchange, I was told this week that the Stock Exchange was negotiating with Sorec, and that JCI, the other major contender, was proceeding with its massive Ferreirastown development without the Exchange. — June 14 1970

Chester Williams blasted back on to the world cup scene with four tries in South Africa’s 42-14 victory over Western Samoa in their quarter-final clash at Ellis Park yesterday. But South Africa’s victory was again marred by controversy amid innuendo that Springbok scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen had made racist remarks to the Samoans soon after the final whistle. “What he said after the game couldn’t be printed,” said captain Pat Lam. But when asked point blank to confirm he’d heard Van der Westhuizen make racist remarks, the Samoan captain paused for thought before answering: “No comment.” Springbok captain Francois Pienaar said: “It’s ridiculous. I can’t believe it.” — June 11 1995
