De Zeekoe Guest Farm in Oudsthoorn, Western Cape, sent us this picture capturing one of its cutest activities: “Five Shy Meerkats”. A few meerkat families live on a neighbouring farm and visitors are taken on a tour to see them at sunrise. Guests watch as the sentinel meerkat emerges from the burrow, to be followed by the rest … then they stretch and turn to sun their little tummies (like mini-solar panels), all the while scanning the horizon as they balance on their hind legs and tails. These are 100% wild meerkats — they have never been fed, touched, or otherwise interfered with by humans — but they are used to seeing humans gawking at them and it doesn’t bother them at all. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
