Polokwane still in the danger zone

- By SAZI HADEBE

● Peter Shalulile showed once again why he’s one of the Premier Soccer League’s lethal strikers when he rescued Highlands Park from the jaws of defeat against relegation-threatened Polokwane City in their encounter that ended in a 1-1 stalemate at Loftus Stadium yesterday.

Shalulile’s goal saw him joining Orlando Pirates’ Gabadinho Mhango on 14 goals atop the Premiership scorers chart.

The Namibian’s goal also ensured Highlands moved from eighth to seventh spot on the log, boosting Owen da Gama’s team’s chances of finishing in the top eight.

For Clinton Larsen’s Polokwane, this result means they’re very much still in the battle to survive relegation as the point gained only moved them off the foot of the table on goals scored. AmaZulu FC are now bottom.

Both these teams are pegged on 24 points with four matches remaining.

Polokwane looked set to bag all the points after taking the lead in the 64th minute via Limbikani Mzava’s own goal before Shalulile rose highest to head in Lindokuhle Mbatha’s corner kick 15 minutes before full time.

Larsen’s charges will have a tough time trying to eke out points to avoid the drop as they face Bloemfontein Celtic, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits in their last three matches.

Shalulile will be hoping to add to his league tally and possibly win the top goal scorers’ award if he scores again in his team’s last three matches against Maritzburg United, Cape Town City and now bottom-placed AmaZulu.
