1.5 IF YOU HAVE HOURS The Social Dilemma Netflix
Director Jeff Orlowski’s sometimes obvious and not quite as revelatory as it thinks it is documentary has caused quite a stir by revealing, through interviews with former employees of the big tech companies, what we always suspected. Social media applications and the people who create them are well aware of the privacy violations, addictive nature and Big Brother applications of their products. It’s suitably frightening stuff and once you’ve watched it, it’s up to you whether you’ll immediately get on social media to tell everyone to watch it, or simply take the plunge, uninstall your apps and stay off your phone as much as possible.
IF YOU HAVE 2 HOURS
On the Basis of Sex Showmax
With the death of US supreme court justice and feminist trailblazer Ruth Bader Ginsburg, now is the time to remind yourself of her incredible and inspiring story thanks to Mimi Leder’s respectful and rightfully righteous 2018 biopic. Starring Felicity Jones as the Notorious RBG in her pre-Notorious days, it’s the story of one woman’s refusal to quit in spite of all the obstacles placed in her way in the ultrapatriarchal world of ’70s America and how she brought down the masters’ house, one heavy brick at a time.
