PSL poll expected to be keenly contested

- By SAZI HADEBE and KHANYISO TSHWAKU

The Premier Soccer League’s annual meeting on November 11 could see new faces enter the executive committee.

The Sunday Times understands 13 officials from various clubs are on the nominations list. New faces are Tshakuma Tsha Madzhivandila owner Masala Mulaudzi, Cape Town City chairperson John Comitis, Chippa United boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi and Robert Benadie of Stellenbosch FC.

Whether they make it onto the sevenmember exco that will serve for four years after the elections remains to be seen as ostensibly, three positions are often up for grabs.

Kaizer Chiefs supremo Kaizer Motaung, Golden Arrows’ iron lady and the PSL’s acting CEO Mato Madlala, SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews and Mamelodi Sundowns’ representative Vakashile Simelane are expected to retain their places.

The exco consists of Motaung, Madlala, Matthews, Simelane, Bloemfontein Celtic’s Khumbulani Konco, Black Leopards boss David Thidiela and former Bidvest Wits CEO Jose Ferreira.

The remaining three places will be keenly contested by Comitis, Thidiela, Mpengesi, Benadie, TTM’s Mulaudzi, Rendani Mulaudzi of the University of Pretoria (AmaTuks), Free State Stars’ Rantsi Mokoena, Konco and Ferreira.

Ferreira’s nomination is strange as the list and the exco itself is generally populated by any of the 32 Premiership and National First Division clubs. Bidvest Wits sold their status to TTM, who are slowly finding their feet.

From a chairperson perspective, Orlando Pirates supremo Irvin Khoza has been nominated unopposed for another four-year term while the exco will be voted for by the Premiership and NFD clubs.

PSL spokesperson Lux September said he hadn’t seen the list and couldn’t provide further information about it.

“Personally, I haven’t seen the list and therefore I can’t be of any assistance to you at all. All I know is that the AGM is on the 11th of November and you guys [media] will be invited to come and observe as per norm. It’s not going to be a virtual thing. It’s going to be open.

“The term of serving in the PSL executive is four years and we have the election in this AGM because the four years has come to an end. But as to who is in or not in the list, including whether there's anyone contesting the current chairman, I can’t comment on that because I haven’t seen the list.”
