1953: Vic Toweel fails in his bid to reclaim the world bantamweig­ht boxing title from Jimmy Carruthers at the Rand Stadium in Johannesbu­rg. Carruthers had dethroned Toweel on a first-round knockout at the same venue four months earlier. On the second occasion, Carruthers won by a knockout in the 10th round. Toweel would have three more fights before retiring at the age of 26 with a record of 28 wins, three defeats and one draw. 1998: Zolani Petelo makes the first defence of his IBF strawweigh­t title, outpointin­g Faisol Akbar of Indonesia at the Carousel casino, north of Pretoria.

2006: Elizna Naude wins the discus title at the Commonweal­th Games in Melbourne, Australia.. Lying second behind India’s Seema Antil, Naude clinches the gold on her third attempt when she hits 61.55m. 2018: Bafana Bafana beat Angola 6-5 on penalties after drawing their four-nations match 1-1 in a tense encounter in Ndola, Zambia. Djalma Campos put Angola ahead in the 31st minute and Lebogang Mothiba equalised 19 minutes later. In the shootout, Mothiba’s effort was saved. At 5-5, Sibusiso Vilakazi slotted the winner to ensure Bafana advanced to the final against the hosts.
