Mountain of cases

-

In 2019, Gauteng chief specialist in forensic pathology Jeanine Vellema said statistics from 2015 showed a national backlog of about 60,000 medicolegal death investigations, and the Johannesburg forensic chemistry laboratory had a backlog of about 13,500 samples, which could take five years to process. “Our service is utterly dependent on the SAPS — investigating officers and laboratories — and the toxicology for the finalisation of cases,” Vellema said.
