1981: Peter “Terror” Mathebula, SA’s first black boxing world champion, loses his WBA flyweight title in his first defence when he’s stopped by Santos Laciar of Argentina at Orlando Stadium. Two of the judges had the fight even at the time of the stoppage in the seventh round.
2000: SA equal what is then a team record for most ducks in an ODI innings as they go down to Pakistan by 67 runs in Sharjah, joining England on five. SA were bowled out for 101 to lose by 67 runs.
2007: Bafana Bafana are beaten 0-1 by Bolivia in a friendly at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, courtesy of a deflected own goal by Macbeth Sibaya.
2007: Cameron van der Burgh wins his first world championship swimming medal, taking bronze in the 50m breaststroke in Melbourne.
2009: Siphiwe Tshabalala scores in the 89th minute as Bafana Bafana edge Norway 2-1 in a friendly at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. The Scandinavians, 45th in the world, were 27 spots above the South Africans.
