Swarming across East Africa too

In March 2020, the UN Food and Agricultur­al Organisati­on said East Africa faced an “unpreceden­ted threat” from desert locusts, which were swarming across the Horn of Africa. The organisati­on said that nearly 10-million people in nine countries, including those in the Sahel, faced dire food insecurity risks as a result. One 1km² swarm consumed as much food in a day as 35,000 people, it said.
