Swarming across East Africa too
In March 2020, the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation said East Africa faced an “unprecedented threat” from desert locusts, which were swarming across the Horn of Africa. The organisation said that nearly 10-million people in nine countries, including those in the Sahel, faced dire food insecurity risks as a result. One 1km² swarm consumed as much food in a day as 35,000 people, it said.
