Jubilee soloist

Maxeke was a soloist in the African Jubilee Choir, which toured Britain and the US between 1891 and 1893 to rapturous audiences. At the end of the tour the organiser deserted with all the funds. The story of the African singers left penniless in New York received widespread publicity and Maxeke was offered a church scholarship at Wilberforce University.
