Azu Nwagbogu — the visionary curator and director of LagosPhoto, for what he’s doing to shape art broadly for Africa.
Zanele Muholi — for everything, specifically for how they’ve raised the bar for photographers in SA and shown the world what we’re capable of. It was a joy for me in August to see Muholi’s upcoming solo show at the Tate Modern in London. That really hit home — I felt patriotic and proud. Muholi has played an important role in upping the photography medium as an art form.
Richard Leroyd — a fine-art photographer in the UK who creates sublime images using a camera obscura. He uses the oldest photo technology to manifest a painterly image with stunning depth of field. His colour palette is dreamy, each of his photographs has a magnetic pull. Being a positive print, each photograph is one-off and original.
