Bail hearing sparks protests

-

The town of Piet Retief was brought to a standstill last month when the men charged with killing the Coka brothers applied for bail. Shops and schools closed as hundreds of protesters demanded they not be granted bail. Community members and supporters of the ANC, EFF, IFP and trade union federation Cosatu went on the rampage, damaging police vehicles as the demonstration turned violent.
