Trans role applauded
In 2014 Laverne Cox made history when she became the first transgender person ever to be nominated for an Emmy Award, for her role as hairdresser Sophia Burset in the TV series Orange Is the New Black. Her character is a transgender woman imprisoned for credit card fraud committed to fund her gender reassignment surgery.
