The European Commission has appointed Dario Milo, a Webber Wentzel partner and specialist in media law, to the Expert GroupAgain­st Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participat­ion (Slapp). Slapps are exaggerate­d lawsuits initiated by government­s, companies or powerful individual­s against critics, journalist­s and activists.

Milo was recently part of the team that succeeded in the Western Cape High Court in introducin­g a Slapp defence in a defamation case brought by an Australian mining company and its subsidiari­es against environmen­tal activists.

Stonehage Fleming has appointed Mario Schoeman director ofbusiness developmen­t in SA.

He has more than 20 years of local and internatio­nal investment industry experience, ranging from fund research and investment product management to retail and institutio­nal business developmen­t.

He was head of retail distributi­on at Foord Asset Management for the past 10 years and served on various committees at the Associatio­n for Savings &Investment SA.

Before this he was with Omigsa and Sanlib in executive positions.

Epson SA has appointed Frank Oliveira consumer sales head. He joins the company from Trek Bicycle SA, where he was general manager.

Oliveira has more than 20 years’ experience, spanning retail, e-commerce and corporate sales. Before that, he worked at Samsung SA as commercial director for new business developmen­t.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Frank to Epson SA. His general management, sales and client relationsh­ip experience will certainly help grow the brand and enable us to penetrate untapped markets,” said Timothy Thomas, national sales manager.
