High life in Joburg on the city skyline
Home on the ridge has views to all four points of the compass
● The suburb of Observatory, set on Johannesburg’s highest point, is renowned for offering the best views of the city.
Now a small part of the famous Johannesburg skyline will go on sale.
It’s rare that houses in this part of the city come on sale, says Johan du Toit of Park Village Auctions.
The suburb was established in 1903 and named for the Union Observatory, which was built on Observatory Ridge, 1,808m above sea level. It is also part of the old Doornfontein farm.
The property at 10 Erna Street will go one auction from 11am on 10 June.
It is a double-storey, split-level house with an entrance foyer, a lounge, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
One of the bedrooms is en suite and also has a dressing room.
Beyond the main house are a swimming pool, a one-bedroom flatlet, and a double garage with a workshop and storeroom. The land measures 2,302m².
Nearby amenities and facilities include the Observatory Golf Club, the Houghton Golf Club, the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, Bezuidenhout Park, Eastgate and Bedfordview shopping centres, and Melrose Arch.
“Observatory is one of Johannesburg’s oldest suburbs. It is steeped in heritage, and homes in this area tend to stay in families for generations. When stock of this calibre comes to market you can be sure it won’t remain available for long,” says Du Toit.
