1953: Brothers Jaap and Dolf Bekker score tries as the Springboks bounce back to down Australia 18-8 in the third Test in Durban to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

1976: Riding an over-the-counter Yamaha, Kork Ballington scores the first GP win of his career, taking the Spanish 350cc title over 34 laps of the Montjuic circuit in Barcelona.

1993: Terence Lazard breaks the almost 54year-old record for the highest individual score in SA first-class cricket, scoring 307 not out for Boland against Western Province in Wellington. Eric Rowan had made 306 not out in 1939. 1998: A weakened Proteas team shocks a full-strength Australian side to win the Commonweal­th Games cricket gold in Kuala Lumpur. Captain Shaun Pollock crucially chose to bowl first and SA bowled out Australia for 183. Mike Rindel (67), Jacques Kallis (44) and Andrew Hudson (36) got SA home with four overs to spare.
