First Afcon final for SA’s Gomes

-

South African referee Victor Gomes will make history in Cameroon tonight when he handles the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Egypt. An SA referee has never handled the Afcon final before and the 39-year-old Gomes has been an international referee since 2011 and was part of the referees that officiated in the 2019 Afcon in Egypt. In 2020 Gomes also became the second SA referee after Jerome Damon (2008) to officiate in the Olympics. Gomes is also one of the African referees who may be chosen to handle matches at the Fifa World Cup in Qatar later this year.
