Raymond & Ray Apple TV +

Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke star in this drama about two brothers reunited after the death of their estranged father. The pair must confront their relationships with each other and their dead dad as they carry out his final wishes and set about literally digging his grave. The central performances have enough warmth and charm to keep the film from falling into the mawkishly sentimental territory that hangs over it.

The Stranger Netflix

This sophisticated, dark crime noir is held together by excellent performances from the brooding Joel Edgerton and the uncomfortably quiet menace of Sean Harris. An ex-con and a stranger are drawn into the world of a man who appears to be a gangster, but may be something far worse, when they team up for a job that will draw them into the unsettling mystery of a tragic past crime.

The Playlist Netflix The fictionalised story of the founding of Spotify as told by the main players in one of recent tech’s most legendary rags-to-riches tales. The narrative follows the journey from conception to realisation, betrayal and even some speculation about what the future may hold for the fraught relationship between the service and the musicians who provide its backbone.

Shantaram Apple TV+

Charlie Hunnam stars as Lin Ford in the long-awaited adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’s bestselling epic novel about the adventures of an Australian ex-convict in the strange, dangerous, but life-changing world of 1980s India.

The Dry Britbox

Roisin Gallagher gives a standout performance in this sly-humoured, tender observational dramedy about a recovering alcoholic who returns to Dublin after years of partying in London. There she finds navigating the sober road is a lifetime’s journey that can seem even longer when you’ve got a boozeloving, dysfunctional Irish family to deal with.
