Reclaiming the spirit of the festive season

-

Christmas used to be a time of great joy, laughter and celebration. It used to be the time of big get-togethers, long travels, and connecting with loved ones. But this spirit has somewhat waned over the years. It has been slowly eroded by our ever-growing problems.

Levels of poverty and unemployment have risen sharply. The economy is stuck in neutral. We have huge electricity supply interruptions. Crime tightens its hold, ravaging communities. The corrupt and uncaring have become bolder in their impunity.

And it’s not just indigent households feeling the pinch. Many families that celebrate the birth of Christ, and others who don’t, have had to cope with breadwinners losing jobs, while those lucky enough to still be employed find themselves contending with stagnant wages. Rising interest rates have translated into higher repayments on mortgage bonds and other primary debt, while petrol price increases mean higher transport costs.

Be that as it may, we know South Africans are a resilient bunch and will find ways to unlock the festive spirit. Millions have made the trek by road or air (even by rail) to reconnect with family or to begin that well-deserved rest at the coast or other holiday spots. As we break bread, let us also not forget those who are without loved ones or enough food to pass around this festive season.

An economist who shared his thoughts on consumer spending these holidays is buoyant. He believes retail spending will be on par with last year, if not higher in nominal terms. High-income earners who have the means to save will boost consumer spending even further.

We agree. We also foresee families temporarily shrugging off the economic blues and reclaiming the spirit of the season. They will go that extra mile, put in that extra effort and make that extra sacrifice to restore some kind of normalcy. Over the lunch table, around the braai, they will remind each other that our problems are not going away, but may offer guidance on how to overcome them.

We wish all South Africans a peaceful and blessed festive season. Take care as you traverse the country, drive safely and do not overindulge.
