Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya and architect turned filmmaker Kibwe Tavares co-direct this dystopian thriller set in 2040 London. Kane “Kano” Robinson stars as Izi, an ex-criminal looking to escape the stifling world of rising house prices, computeris­ed labour and the destructio­n of the welfare state that have turned the city into a paradise for the uber-rich at the expense of its working-class citizens. When he’s forced to be part of what he believes is one last heist in order to save his son, a chain of events is set off that will change his life and the lives of his neighbourh­ood, The Kitchen, forever.

As director Yorgos Lanthimos’s much-hypedfor-awards-season film ‘Poor Things’ arrives in cinemas this week, his previous Oscarnomin­ated, dark period comedy about the rivalry between Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman) and her viciously cunning servant Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) is well worth a revisit.
