Elroy van Heerden is the CEO at Media Xpose

Tell me about Media Xpose and the magazines you publish.

Media Xpose was founded in September 2010, sparked by my passion for publishing after several years in the industry. Immersed in everything related to publishing, I had numerous magazine concepts waiting to be realised. Choosing which idea to bring to life first was a challenging task. However, within three months of establishing the business, we successfully launched our inaugural magazine, To Build, which became our cornerstone publication. Subsequently, we introduced new titles each year, culminating in nine thriving publications, each catering to a distinct niche.

As publishers, we produce a diverse range of print publications, including To Build, SA Building Review, Baby’s and Beyond, SA Business Integrator, SA Profile, Rove SA, Future SA, Essential Flavours, and InBound SA.

What are your most important tasks as CEO?

I would prioritise maintaining the stability of the boat and guiding everything and everyone in the right direction. Also keeping our clients’ best interests at heart and ensuring that we consistently deliver on our promise of providing excellence in exposure.

How did you end up as CEO of a publishing company?

I strongly believe in the adage “knowledge is power”. When I began my career as an advertising sales consultant, I took the initiative to connect with individuals across various departments within the company. I was genuinely curious about their roles and responsibilities within the company. This curiosity ignited a passion within me, driving me to dedicate my free time to developing plans and ideas for launching my own publishing company.

Through hard work and determination, I progressed to a managerial position in my previous company. It was in this role that I discovered my true potential. Despite having only five to six years of experience in sales and management, I leveraged the knowledge I had acquired to venture into entrepreneurship. With the support of my clients I launched my own company.

What do you think makes you good at what you do?

I maintain consistency in my actions, guided by our company motto, “excellence in exposure”. Additionally, I am dedicated to empowering both my colleagues and myself, driven by my passion for the industry. Leading by example, I prioritise active listening and fostering collaborative environments.

What do you look for when recruiting new people?

I prioritise confidence when considering candidates because I believe it can empower anyone to achieve great things, regardless of their level of experience. For instance, a young lady approached our offices seeking a sales position. Despite lacking direct experience, her confidence stood out during the interview. Recognising her potential, I offered her a role as a junior writer, leveraging her background in journalism. Today, she excels in her position.

While I value confidence highly, I must acknowledge my tendency to struggle with hiring inexperienced individuals. I have a desire to give opportunities to all applicants, but this has led to some past employment missteps.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?

The most valuable advice I’ve received emphasises the importance of continuous learning and personal growth. It encourages cultivating a growth mindset, remaining open to feedback, consistently seeking out challenges, and embracing opportunities for professional development. In today’s fastpaced and evolving job market, acquiring new skills and knowledge is essential for remaining relevant and adaptable.
