Chop-facing Burnley get a point at Man United

-

● Manchester United could only muster a point against Burnley yesterday after substitute Zeki Amdouni scored a late penalty to rescue a 1-1 Premier League draw for the relegation-threatened side.

Burnley’s 87th-minute penalty, awarded after goalkeeper Andre Onana fouled Amdouni in the box, cancelled a late strike by Antony. This leaves Erik ten Hag’s team sixth in the standings at six points behind fifthplaced Tottenham Hotspur who have two games in hand. Burnley are 19th.

United squandered numerous chances, and had Onana to thank for keeping Burnley off the scoresheet before Antony broke the deadlock in the 79th minute. The Brazilian intercepted a poor pass and sprinted into the box before finishing into the bottom corner.

The celebration at Old Trafford was shortlived, however, as Onana hit Amdouni in the face while clearing the ball in the 87th minute. VAR confirmed the penalty, which Amdouni calmly put into the bottom corner to give his side a valuable point.

At St James’ Park, Alexander Isak netted twice while Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson were also on target as Newcastle United thrashed Sheffield United 5-1 to confirm the visitors’ relegation from the Premier League. Sheffield’s Ben Osborn scored an own goal for seventh-placed Newcastle, who move to 53 points from 34 games this season. Sheffield remain on 16 points from 35 matches and cannot finish outside the bottom three.

At Craven Cottage, a scorching left-footed finish by Jeffrey Schlupp got Crystal Palace a late equaliser against Fulham, salvaging a 1-1 draw.

Adam Wharton’s pass found Schlupp outside the box in the 87th minute and the Ghana forward sent the ball crashing into the net from 20 yards out. Fulham had taken the lead in the 52nd minute when Rodrigo Muniz headed Timothy Castagne’s cross into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

Fulham remained 13th with 43 points from 35 matches, one place and three points ahead of Palace.

At Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton Wanderers handed relegation-threatened Luton Town yet another blow to their Premier League survival hopes with a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals by Hwang Hee-chan and Toti Gomes.

Luton made a positive start, but it was Wolves who opened the scoring in the 39th minute as Hwang capitalised on a counterattack, receiving a pass from Matheus Cunha and driving down the left flank before cutting inside and unleashing a low shot that deflected off Luton defender Teden Mengi.

Wolves centre-back Gomes doubled his side’s lead just minutes after the start of the second half from a short corner routine when he found Mario Lemina’s perfect cross to head the ball into the net past goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Carlton Morris pulled one back for Luton in the 80th minute but it was not enough to grab a point or stir a comeback. Wolves move to 10th place in the standings with 46 points, while promoted Luton remain 18th on 25 with three games to go.
