Rovers keep Moor Cup momentum

- CRAIG LEWIS

JONSSON College Rovers maintained their momentum in the Fidelity Security Moor Cup and continued their march towards next weekend’s big clash against local rivals Acer Durban Collegians as they claimed a 47-25 win over Thanda Zululand Rhinos at KP3 yesterday afternoon.

While the champs would have been happy with the result – a sixth straight bonus-point victory of the season – it was one of their toughest matches, with Rhinos producing a gallant performance. A brace of tries to wing Anton Verster, captain Chris Micklewood and lock Kosie Haarhoff ensured Rovers got the job done.

Rhinos may not have won a game yet this season, but they crossed the tryline on three occasions, with Bruce Muller, Uwe Schmahl and Thokozani Mdluli dotting down.

Collegians have had an indifferent start to this year’s Premier Division, but an improved performance saw them collect the full five log points with a 24-5 victory over Ricoh Maritzburg Collegians.

Leading 7-0 at half-time after a try to wing Quinton Dormehl, flank Francois Kleinhans, lock Peet Marais and prop Francois Hanekom all scored in a more dominant second stanza.

In Pietermaritzburg, Varsity College Old Boys defeated FNB UKZN Maritzburg 30-13. Winger Troy Chiocotti scored a double, while in-form flanker Brian Shabanga scored once.

Brandon Bailing scored twice as Bluff Superspar Harlequins recorded their third win of the season in overcoming Telnet Crusaders 34-23.
