Sex worker’s head is found

THE head of a Chatsworth sex worker, which was missing when her body was discovered on a football field earlier this week, was found on Friday.

A top police investigative team, led by Colonel Bongani Biyela, found the head of 39-year-old Desiree Murugan in Infume, a small village on the South Coast.

Members of the Chatsworth SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Unit arrested six suspects, including a woman and a traditional healer, on Thursday.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 32, will be charged with murder and are expected to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

“We assured the deceased’s family we would make arrests and find the missing head before the end of the week,” said SAPS spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

Murugan’s mother, Ambi, said learning about her daughter’s death had been “traumatising” in itself, but the missing head had compounded her family’s pain.

When the Sunday Tribune interviewed the mother yesterday, she was not aware of the arrests, or that the head had been found, but welcomed the news.

“I’m yet to be told that Desiree’s head was found and that suspects had been arrested, but if it is true, then at least we are getting closure,” said the mother.

Her son, Chris, later said that members of his family decided not to immediately share the latest developments with his mother because of her frail health.

“Earlier in the week, we had to sedate my mother,” he said.

The deceased’s funeral was scheduled for yesterday, but has been postponed until Saturday.

“Desiree, in spite of the work she did, was a very religious person. She would have wanted us to adhere to all our religious duties,” the mother said.

The mother apparently warned her daughter that the area (in Shallcross) she was working in was very dangerous, and that she (Desiree) could be killed, when they last met on August 8.

Desiree’s response to her mother was: “Who will do that to me?”
