“I don’t give up or give in when I have set my mind on something. Not even (an offer of) R1 000 would get me to eat a Bar-One three weeks out from a competition! That’s (settling for) third place right there!” Howden has her short- and medium-term plans set out already. “I am honoured to have been selected to represent KZN at the prestigious IFBB South African Championships, which takes place in Cape Town on September 10-13, where I will compete in the Fitness Bikini over-35 division.

“Thereafter, I will compete at the SSN Team Universe show on September 28 at Sibaya Casino. Both shows are qualifiers for IFBB-affiliated athletes to represent South Africa on an international level. Representing South Africa is also part of my plan.” Howden believes it’s not about how much time is spent training, but rather how well one uses the time there. “Unlike most people think, I don’t spend hours of my day in the gym. It’s all about quality, not quantity.

“I train as hard and as heavy as I can till I feel the burn (or ‘all fall down’ on what we call leg days). “One hour or 4 percent of my day is the physical part, the easy part. The rest of the time you have to be disciplined with your eating! It’s controlling the mind that matters! “I am very fortunate to have Andrew Hudson as my coach. He is a guru when it comes to bodybuilding. “It’s not all about pumping iron. It’s a science and an art, and Andrew’s knowledge and application of those principles within the sport is profound. I have no doubt that he will be regarded as the top coach in South Africa.”

While the training is focused and specific, Howden says she is flattered to have

realised that in such a short time in the sport there are many people who see her as a role model.

“I am not a sponsored athlete, but like all fitness athletes, aspire to be one. I have only recently come to realise the number of people who find my lifestyle and fitness journey inspiring.

“People openly approach me in the gym or while I’m shopping for groceries and I am flattered when young girls say they want to look like me when they are a mom.

“It’s incredibly fulfilling knowing that I can make an impact on other people’s life just by being fit and healthy. I am always on social media and people can follow me.”
