Who’ll win at Emmys?
IT’S the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards tomorrow and this year’s been one of the tightest races in recent years. Here’s my picks and which actors and shows I think the Emmy voters will award. Saturday Night Live alumnus Seth Meyers hosts the show for the first time. We can catch it on Monday, midnight on E!Entertainment and Tuesday 6pm on M-Net. Outstanding Drama Series Breaking Bad; Downton Abbey; Game of Thrones; Mad Men; True Detective; House of Cards
Who will win: True Detective. The HBO drama stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and is the breakout hit of the year. It’s dark, gritty and it’s on HBO, which is everything that Emmy voters love.
Who should win: Breaking Bad. The final season of what some call the best TV show of all time was a masterpiece. The work of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn was so great, that the show not only deserves the drama award, but also the acting awards.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad; Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom; Kevin Spacey, House of Cards; Jon Hamm, Mad Men; Matthew McConaughey, True Detective; Woody Harrelson, True Detective
Who will win: Matthew McConaughey. It’s simple. Buzzworthy Oscar winner, doing his best work ever, in a TV show? No one would blame the Emmys for rewarding Matthew.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Michelle Dockery, Downton
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Jon Voight, Ray Donovan; Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones; Mandy Patinkin, Homeland; Josh Charles, The Good Wife; Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad; Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
Who will win: Peter Dinklage. He entered the fourth season finale and my, what a cracker of an episode. It’s Dinklage’s finest work on the series.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory; Matt LeBlanc, Episodes; Don Cheadle, House of Lies; Louis CK, Louie; William H. Macy, Shameless; Ricky Gervais, Derek
Who will win: Jim Parsons has to win again. Not that the other actors don’t deserve to, it’s just that Jim is excellent as Sheldon Cooper.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Lena Dunham, Girls; Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie; Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation; Julia Louis-Dreyfus,
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Adam Driver, Girls; Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family; Fred Armisen, Portlandia; Ty Burrell, Modern Family; Tony Hale, Veep; Andre Braugher, Brooklyn NineNine
Who will win: Ty Burrell. The Academy loves Modern Family.
Who should win: Fred Armisen. I sometimes wonder if Fred is acting on Portlandia. Half the work on the show is adlibs and not many people can pull that off.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory; Julie Bowen, Modern Family; Anna Chlumsky, Veep; Allison Janney, Mom; Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live; Kate Mulgrew, Orange Is the New Black
Who will win: Allison Janney is the best part of Mom. Without her, the comedy would be a dud and for that she deserves the Emmy.
