A clear solution for Durbanites keen on recycling cans and glass

-

DURBANITES passionate about recycling will be happy to know the eThekwini Municipality will be introducing a new municipal recycling bag service for cans and glass.

While it has already been rolled out in certain areas, it will be launched officially in all suburbs in January. Ratepayers will initially not be charged for the bags.

Head of eThekwini communications Tozi Mthethwa said the clear bags would be made from 50 microns to stop them from being pierced if the glass was broken, and to protect collectors.

“These bags will also have a drawstring, as this will enable easy collection and handling by contractors. The clear bags will be introduced to areas that already have the orange-bag recycling project. The city will also extend the project to other areas.”

She said glass that was collected would be sent to Joburg for recycling.

She said the city was passionate about the environment and promoting recycling and other green initiatives.

“The city supplies 1 300 tons of recyclable waste to various markets every month, and also takes a total of 5 000 tons of rubbish to landfill sites every day. The less we send to the landfill, the less need there will be for new landfill sites in the future,” she said.

The city will also be distributing the orange bags to informal settlements and rural areas for the first time next year.

The new clear bags will be collected on the same day as the orange bags.

Orange bags and clear bags will not be collected if they are filled with the wrong materials.
