Hill looks to clinch third Sharks title

- KYLE GILHAM

SHONGWENI: Defending champ Andrew Hill is relishing a return to the picturesque setting that is Summerveld Estate in Shongweni next Sunday for the third staging of the Stihl Sharks Trail Adventure.

The TIB Insurance rider, having clinched both the 2012 and 2013 men’s half-marathon MTB titles previously, is relishing a return to the relaxed, family friendly environment while also quietly eyeing another strong performance on the bike, which would see him clinch a third consecutive title.

“I’ve won up at Shongweni a couple of years in a row now, so it would be cool to try and win it again this year,” said Hill.

“The Sharks Trail Adventure is also such a great event as a whole – a great family atmosphere and the perfect end of year day out for everyone, so I’m looking forward to heading up to Summerveld again,” he said.

On the trails, participants have plenty to choose from, with no fewer than four MTB and two trail running events set to take cycling and running enthusiasts on the perfect final outdoor adventure.

On top of the 40km halfmarathon that Hill and the like are set to enjoy, a 20km intermediate, 10km family ride and the hugely popular Sharkie kids’ ride promise to have something for everyone, while the 18km and 9km trail runs offer spectacular views and fascinating twists and turns throughout.

For those who do not heed the beckon of the trails, the magnificent race village promises to have plenty on offer for spectators, seconds and general community members looking for a great day out in the countryside.

The exciting stalls of the exclusive Sunday staging of the renowned Shongweni Farmers’ Market and the live entertainment by top South Coast act, The Kickstands, will add to the unrivalled festive spirit of the village.

The entire Cell C Sharks pre-season training squad will also be in attendance, together with everyone’s favourite mascot, Sharkie.

The players’ involvement in the handing out of refreshments at the water tables, as well as an open signing session, gives the fans a rare opportunity to come face to face with their rugby heroes.

A South African gathering isn’t complete without a braai, and the beautiful setting of the Summerveld Estate provides the ideal location for exactly that.

After crossing the finish line, friends and family are encouraged to spread out on a blanket on the lush green grass in the shade of the age-old trees at the venue and enjoy each other’s company as the year starts to wind down for cycling enthusiasts.

This year’s Stihl Sharks Trail Adventure takes place at Summerveld Estate, Shongweni next Sunday.
