The Flames, The Jets get it on

- HERALD REPORTER

IT WILL be a case of legends reliving musical memories when Steve Fataar of The Flames and Cyril Francis of The Jets share the stage in Blast from the Past in Durban next weekend.

The show at the Bat Centre will feature the duo performing some of the greatest hits of the 1950s and 1960s, a period in which The Flames and The Jets achieved prominence on the South African music scene.

“We’ve known each other for years and it’s always a pleasure to perform together. It’s a trip down memory lane, nostalgia that we enjoy sharing with audiences,” said Fataar, 70.

As lead guitarist of The Flames, Fataar enjoyed considerable success in the 1960s in which the band scored a number one hit with its signature tune Your Precious Love.

A UK tour followed during which the band was discovered by the Beach Boys, who signed them to their label Brother Records. The Flames completed an album and toured 30 states with the Beach Boys.

The Flames broke up in the 1970s but have reunited on occasion.

“I still don’t fully understand the impact the music of The Flames had on people back then. It represented an important period in their lives and when I play Your Precious Love at shows it means a lot to people. There isn’t a gig I play where that song is not requested,” Fataar said.

”We’re going to be playing some real oldies. Songs I haven’t played since I was 17 years old. I am excited and looking forward to it.”

Francis, who recently moved back to Durban, said that he was looking forward to the performance.

“As The Jets we were known for our covers of the Shadows and of the Ventures so I will definitely be playing some of those songs. I hope to do some Santana as well.

“I’m looking forward to working with Steve and I’m sure the audience is going to have a great time.”

Blast from the Past takes place on December 6, at 8pm at the Bat Centre, Wilson’s Wharf.

Tickets are available from Computicket and Shoprite.
