South Africa lead the tie 2-1 with today’s reverse singles to be played. Fritz Wolmarans will face Ilhan, while Tucker Vorster takes on Ilke in the final match. – Own reporter BARCELONA: Barcelona will have to do without suspended striker Neymar for today’s La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano, but the Brazilian’s absence could be an ideal opportunity for Pedro to show his value to coach Luis Enrique.

The Tenerife-born youth product has struggled to realise his potential after bursting onto the scene under former coach Pep Guardiola.

He became the first Barca player to score in all six club competitions as the Catalans hoovered up all available silverware in the 2009 calendar year. – Reuters MEXICO CITY: Estonian driver Ott Tanak was back in the Rally of Mexico yesterday after his submerged Ford was fished out of a reservoir and rebuilt overnight.

Tanak’s car rolled down a steep embankment and plunged into deep water on Friday’s second leg of the rally, remaining sunk for 10 hours.

“As we opened the doors the car was gone in a few seconds,” the driver said after he and codriver Raigo Moelder, who managed to retrieve his pace notes, had scrambled free. – Reuters LONDON: Former England captain Kevin Pietersen had received “a few” offers from English county sides as he bids to return to the Test team, the 34-year-old said.

Incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves refused last week to rule out a return to the England set-up for the controversial Pietersen, but said the South African-born batsman would need to score runs at county level to help his cause.

Pietersen said he was excited by the development, but would need to weigh up his options. – Reuters LOS ANGELES: The LA Galaxy kicked off the new MLS season with a 2-0 home win over Chicago Fire on Friday night, with goals from Jose Villarreal and Robbie Keane.

Villarreal put the hosts ahead in the 65th minute of a dominant performance by the Galaxy, three months after they raised their third MLS Cup trophy in four seasons.

They are unbeaten in 17 league games at home since March 8, 2014. – Sapa-AP

Rice highlights concussion

NEW YORK: It was a long road to a shortened National Football League career for Sidney Rice, an All-Pro receiver who retired last July at the age of 27 due to fears about his long-term health after numerous concussions.

Rice, who sustained about 20 concussions during his playing career, this week joined New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford in announcing they were donating their brains to medical research once they die.

Rice broke in with Minnesota in 2007 and won a Super Bowl with Seattle at the end of the 2013 season in an injury-plagued career.

“I had both shoulders repaired, microfracture on my right hip, torn ACL in my left knee and torn patella tendon in my right knee,” he said. – Reuters

Bantams, Royals set for replay

LONDON: FA Cup giant-killers Bradford City and Championship side Reading played out a full-blooded 0-0 draw in their quarter-final yesterday to force a replay with a Wembley semifinal at stake.

Third tier Bradford, who knocked out Premier League leaders Chelsea and Sunderland in a remarkable run to the last eight, dominated much of the second half, but were unable to break down Reading’s resolute defence.

Despite living a charmed life, second tier Reading could have won it in the closing minutes when Oliver Norwood’s free kick hit the post and caused havoc in the Bradford area. – Reuters

Chen powers past Lin at last

BIRMINGHAM: World champion Chen Long outmuscled fellow Chinese Lin Dan 21-13 21-12 in a one-way semi-final at the All-England Championships yesterday to confirm a shift in power in men’s badminton.

Chen, who has remained in Lin’s shadow as he has advanced to the top of the rankings, rubber-stamped his status with a superb allround performance.

It was a largely insipid display from Lin, the five-times All-England champion, who was baffled by the decision of television chiefs not to broadcast the standout clash of the tournament from the main arena court. – Reuters
