Charou’s back with a new show

- CLINTON MOODLEY

The mysterious Karou Charou is opening his new show this month at the Izulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino, and to prepare readers for Kama Sutra 2: Come Again, the Herald spoke to the character to find out what makes him tick and about any upcoming projects.

Tell us about your new show.

Kama Sutra 2 is the much anticipated sequel to the soldout success of Kama Sutra.

How popular is adult comedy among Durbanites?

Adult comedy in Durban is huge, and it’s the Indian market that is supporting and making it happen. When Kama Sutra launched in 2011, adult comedy was almost unheard of and very rare on the Indian circuit. Nobody was prepared to risk it. Well, I have and I can safely say it revolutionised the Indian comedy industry. There are now other comedians who are branching off into adult entertainment as this is what the market is demanding.

What got you into this profession?

I started off MCing gigs for fun and goofing off on stage, but I never saw myself being on the comedy circuit until I was part of Russell Peters’s first South African tour. I saw what Russell did every night and said to myself, “I can do this!”

The rest, as they say, is history.

What was your most embarrassing moment on stage?

I haven’t had one as yet. I tend to improvise if things don’t work out. So I use a potentially embarrassing moment to create a funny one. What’s next Charou?

I would definitely love to do more shows in Johannesburg and possibly some

television work.

I also want to take my brand overseas – this is a big part of my 2015/2016 plan.

Who are your role models?

Real people. The men and women who rise every morning to make a difference in their lives and those of their children. Honest, hardworking people motivate me.

What’s one line you live by?

for

“The greatest fear in the world is worrying about the opinion of others. The moment you are unafraid of the crowd, you become a lion, with the roar of freedom in your heart.”

What are your favourite Sunday

Karou

pastimes?

Reading the Sunday Tribune Herald. I love paging through the newspapers to keep up to date with happenings around the world, and the Herald is one of my first reads, mainly because I am interested in what my people are up to.
